The Birth of Jeans
The Birth of Jeans

Jeans are pants made from denim fabric. Here’s a summary of how jeans came to be.

Jeans were born during the Gold Rush of 1848, when gold miners flooded into America seeking their fortune.

It is famous for attracting miners from around the world seeking to strike it rich.
Gold Rush
A gold rush refers to the mass influx of miners seeking to strike it rich by discovering gold veins in newly discovered gold fields.
In the narrow sense, it refers to the California Gold Rush that occurred around 1848 in the U.S. state of California, though the term “gold rush” itself did not appear until the mid-1870s.

The gold mines of the Gold Rush offered harsh conditions. It was in this environment that Levi’s created its durable jeans.

The mining sites were harsh environments filled with mud, dirt, and water, and the pants of that era would quickly fall apart.

Immigrants flock from around the world seeking to strike it rich.

Work clothes quickly become worn out due to mud, dirt, water, and harsh working conditions.

Work clothes wear out quickly, so miners are requesting ‘durable work clothes’.

Levi Strauss, founder of Levi’s, created off-white work pants from 10-ounce twill canvas.

Levi Strauss creates more durable 9-ounce blue denim work pants.

Craftsman Jacob Davis solved the problem of work pants pockets tearing easily by applying rivets.

On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis jointly obtained a patent for “A Method of Reinforcing Pockets in Clothing Using Rivets.”

The clothing production division was established within Levi Strauss & Co., operated by Levi Strauss. Jacob Davis was appointed supervisor of the production division. This marked the birth of Levi’s.

It is said that the term “jeans” came into use around 1920.
What is a rivet?

During the Gold Rush, denim work pants were born out of harsh conditions.
The harsh working conditions in gold mines also caused the pockets of those work pants to fray easily, but we solved that problem with rivets.

Thanks to the rivets conceived by Jacob Davis, pockets no longer fray easily.

Rivets are the metal studs found along the edges of jeans pockets.
Rivets are inserted through the fabric from the back using pointed metal fittings. The protruding part on the front is secured with metal fittings. This prevents the pocket from fraying.

Rivets are not only used to reinforce pockets and other areas, but are now also attached as a fashion statement.
