About Jeans Inches
What is an Inch?

An inch (in) is a unit of length.
“in” is an abbreviation for “inch.”

The reason it is unfamiliar in Japan is that it is a unit of length used in the British Isles.

Since jeans originated in America, the size labels on jeans use inches (in).

The inch (in) is a unit used in the UK, and it’s hard for us Japanese to grasp just how long it is.
So converting inches (in) to the centimeters (cm) we use, we get: 1 inch (in) 🟰 2.54 centimeters (cm).
What does “inches” mean on jeans?

An inch (in) is a unit of length.
The ‘inch (in)’ measurement used for jeans also employs this unit of length.

Image 1 is the product description for the ‘1955 501® Original Fit Men’s Jeans’ sold by Levi’s.
The red circles in the product description show ‘30’ and ‘31’. This indicates the waist size of the jeans.

The waist size is larger for 31 inches than for 30 inches.

Image 2 shows the detailed description of the product.
The red square indicates ‘W30’, which is a pair of jeans with a waist size of ‘30 inches (in)’.

As an example, we’ll explain using the ‘W30’ jeans.

『W30』 refers to jeans with a waist size of 『30 inches (in)』.

We will convert the waist and inseam measurements from inches (in) to centimeters (cm).
Since 1 inch (in) 🟰 2.54 centimeters (cm), the calculation for ‘W30’ is as follows.
『2.54 centimeters (cm)』✖️30🟰『76.0 centimeters (cm)』

Compare this to the size in the product description in Figure 3.
| Waist | |
|---|---|
| Convert ‘W30’ to ‘centimeters (cm)’ using calculation | 76.0cm |
| Product Details Size | 77.4cm – 78.7cm |

When compared, the lengths differ slightly, but I believe it’s fair to call them approximate values.

Inches are only a rough guide; we recommend actually trying them on to find your favorite pair of jeans.

I heard that jeans have different sizes in centimeters (cm) even when the same “inch (in)” measurement is used for men’s and women’s sizes.

At Levi’s, items with the same inch measurement in men’s and women’s sizes share the same waist size, so we are currently investigating this matter.
